I guess you could say that image making is in my blood. My father Robert Blomfield was an outstanding street photographer, and some of my earliest memories are of the whir of his slide projector in the dark, or opening his cupboards full of yellow Kodak boxes.
“My style of photography is documentary at heart. I prefer natural light to flash where possible, and spontaneous portraits to posed subjects”
As the editor of a snowboard magazine for over ten years, I’ve since learned from many other talented photographers, and have been inspired by curating thousands of pictures from across the world. I’ve also been fortunate enough to travel with my own camera – from crowded Olympic events watched by millions, to remote mountain landscapes – and capture the story that unfolds.
My style of photography is documentary at heart. I prefer natural light to flash where possible, and spontaneous portraits to posed subjects. I try to reveal the genuine magic in life. The equipment might have moved on since my dad’s day but the essence of a good shot remains the same: it tells a story.
In my work at major events and as a wedding photographer in Cornwall, I enjoy that palpable sense of excitement and the chance to shoot people at their relaxed best. My job is not to intrude or turn the occasion into a studio shoot, but rather to convey the joy of the day with honesty and warmth.
I feel lucky to live in Cornwall, which never ceases to be a beautiful place to photograph whatever the season. When I’m not behind the lens you’ll find me paddling into the surf at Perranporth, or playing on the sand with my wife Rachel and our six-year-old daughter Iris.
